It’s not like any of us need anything else to read, right? Today I spent the day on the couch with the nasty creeping crud my lovely son brought home for me. I soon caught up on my Battlestar Galactica, West Wing and Dog Whisperer episodes (I LOVE my Tivo!). There was nothing left to do but pull out my laptop and cruise through the blogosphere. A quick Google for creative writing blogs brought me to a wonderful list of creative writing blogs at BestCollegesOnline.com, many of which I had not previously discovered. Go peruse the list here: Top 100 Creative Writing Blogs

Sometimes I enjoy being alone in my own little writer’s cave. And sometimes it does me a whole lot of good to get out in the world and mingle with my fellow writers. Saturday, I attended the monthly meeting of my local writers’ group, Virginia Romance Writers. During social time before the meeting, and lunch after, I connected with other writers, caught up on industry gossip, talked craft, traded tips and tricks for crafting characters, etc. During the meeting I was introduced to almost a dozen different devices and software programs that are useful to writers — yes, writers can be techno-geeks, too! It never fails to re-energize me (in spite of being an introvert) to talk to other writers, kindred spirits in this weird craft we all practice.
I left Richmond feeling a renewed sense of myself as a writer. And even though I was ready to dive back into my writing cave when I got home, I’m also really looking forward to the next time I can take a Saturday and spend it with a community of writers.

Scene and Structure by Jack M. Bickham
rating: 5 of 5 stars
If I could only have one book on the craft of writing this would be the one. I read it (the first time) many years ago and it’s the one book I pull out on a regular basis to remind myself of the importance of scene goals and disasters, sequels, and the tricks of pacing. Easy to read. Easy to understand. I recommend it to every writer I know. If you don’t have a copy, get thee to a bookstore/site and correct that error right away.
